Citizens demand urban sustainability

European citizens are requesting more upcoming green areas, sustainable mobility and clean air.

Citizen awareness is increasing towards sustainable mobility. It is the result of a study published by CleanCities, after a survey of more than 10,000 citizens from 15 European cities.

The main conclusions of the survey are:

  • An overwhelming majority of European city-dwellers want more green spaces and areas. Specifically, eight out of ten (82%). In Barcelona (89%) and in Madrid (86%).

  • A clear majority demands more space and actions for sustainable and clean mobility: 68% want cities to do more to promote the use of public transport and more space for pedestrians (66%) and cyclists (56%).
  • 71% of the citizens surveyed demand protection against air pollution. In the case of Barcelona (77%) and Madrid (79%).

  • When it comes to cars, 67% want less road traffic pollution, while there is a majority (59%) in support of emission-free cars after 2030.

The CleanCities campaign is a new European movement aiming to encourage cities to transition to zero-emission transport by 2030.

The campaign champions active, shared and electric mobility for a more liveable and sustainable urban future, which also requires phasing out polluting vehicles from cities within a decade.

The goal is to reduce the environmental and public health effects of transport-related air pollution in cities. Help The CleanCities campaign to get the signatures to propose to the European Commission to phase out the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans.
